PSG must save 30% on wage costs: Status at Messi, Marquinhos & Co.

“L’Équipe” report

Talks between Paris Saint-Germain and Captain Marquinhos have been going on for over a year and a half, and now they are on the home straight: As the newspaper “L’Equipe” reported, the Brazilian international, who is tied until 2024, is about to extend his contract.

Accordingly, both sides have agreed on a new contract until 2027 – the last year possibly as an option – only details have to be clarified. Marquinhos joined PSG from AS Roma in 2013 for 31.4 million euros, only Marco Verratti (30) has been in the Parisian squad longer. The duo should catch up with record player Jean-Marc Pilorget (435 appearances) in the future, Verratti has made 401 appearances so far and Marquinhos has made 392 appearances in PSG dress.

According to the newspaper, there are two reasons why the talks that started in the course of 2021 are going on for so long: Firstly, the two sides were initially far apart when it came to salary, secondly, they had no reason to rush and always had the will to talk to one another to bring good ending. Club boss Nasser Al-Khelaïfi even dreams of Marquinhos retiring at PSG.

Besides Marquinhos: PSG also in talks with Messi and Kimpembe

Alongside Marquinhos, efforts are also ongoing to ensure superstar Lionel Messi (35) stays under contract until the end of the season with an option for a further year, which can only be activated if both parties agree. “We are in talks,” confirmed Paris’ strategic advisor Luís Campos on the show “Telefoot“. “I’d be happy if he continues, but we’re currently discussing to try to achieve the goal of keeping Leo Messi with us.”

According to “L’Équipe”, another meeting is planned for this month, but Messi is also being courted from Saudi Arabia, where Cristiano Ronaldo (38) has been with Al-Nassr FC since January. The financial issue is also at the center of talks with Messi, as PSG are on UEFA’s watch list for financial fair play and, according to the paper, are forced to cut wage bills by 30 percent and be cautious about investments.

The planning is also progressing in the defense center. Talks are underway with Presnel Kimpembe (27), who is tied until 2024, and he already has an offer from PSG. But everything is still open. The future of Sergio Ramos (36) is said to depend on the performances over the next few months. The contract of the world champion from 2010 expires.
