PSG: Ander Herrera returns to Athletic Bilbao on loan

Meets coach Valverde again

Eight years after his €36m departure from Manchester United, Ander Herrera returns to Athletic Bilbao. The 33-year-old, who is linked to Paris Saint-Germain until 2024, joins the Basques on loan, for whom he made 128 appearances between 2011 and 2014, in which he was directly involved in 30 goals. The LaLiga club also secured a purchase option.

As at Athletic, Herrera meets coach Ernesto Valverde, under whom he made 39 appearances in 2013/14. At PSG, the midfielder no longer played a role in the plans of new coach Christophe Galtier and was sorted out at the beginning of the season. Herrera has made 95 appearances (six goals) for the Parisians since signing from the Red Devils on a free transfer in the summer of 2019, 28 of them last season.

“It is a great pleasure to be back here. It’s been eight years since I left. It’s been a great three years and it’s always nice to come back,” said Herrera. “There’s a very competitive side and there’s Ernesto who I’ve worked with before. We only spent a year together and it went very well, both athletically and personally. Since then we have had a close relationship. I will try to contribute my qualities and experience.”
