The Colonies of Benevolence are a UNESCO world heritage area with a major restoration task for buildings. A large number of the national monuments in Veenhuizen, Frederiksoord and Wilhelminaoord are in poor condition to a greater or lesser extent.

To prevent further deterioration and to arrive at a situation where only regular maintenance is required, a lot still needs to be done and a number of buildings must also be repurposed.

To this end, the province, together with those involved, has drawn up the Ten-Year Plan for the Restoration and Repurposing of the Colonies of Benevolence.

Progress has been made in recent years with provincial and national money and the efforts of the major owners, but the scale of the restoration task remains large.
