The province of Drenthe and Rijkswaterstaat will tackle the Gieten traffic circle and the N34. For example, there will be an extended bus lane towards the public transport junction in Gieten, allowing buses to drive past the traffic jam during rush hour.
An extra lane will be constructed for traffic from the N33 (Assen) to the N34 (Emmen), making it easier for traffic to merge and reducing the risk of traffic jams. In addition, there will be an overtaking ban on the N34 between Zuidlaren and De Punt and between Exloo and Borger and the shoulder will be paved. These activities are combined with maintenance of the motorway. This work will start in the spring of 2026 and be completed by December of that year.
Barriers have also been placed at the Gieten exit to prevent traffic jams. These will be replaced by a guide rail at a later time.
