Following the violent death of nurse Alex Pretti at the hands of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on January 24, British singer-songwriter Billy Bragg is opening a new musical front in the fight against violence and state repression.
Protest song in 24 hours: Bragg’s quick answer
Within 24 hours of the incident, Bragg wrote, produced and released his new single “City of Heroes.” With the song he shows solidarity with the people in Minneapolis who have been taking to the streets against the aggressive actions of the federal authorities for months.
Against Silence: The Message of “City of Heroes”
In “City of Heroes” Bragg takes aim at silence in times of violence and against state power structures that rise above the law. The song draws on historical lessons to reinforce the importance of civil resistance and highlights the importance of standing up against injustice – especially when lives are at stake. In a statement, Bragg said he wrote the song as a tribute to the courage of the protesters. Their resistance is “an inspiration for all of us” – a sentence that summarizes the song’s central message.
The Boss speaks out: Springsteen’s “Streets of Minneapolis”
Bragg is not alone. Other artists have also taken a public stand and responded musically to the events in Minneapolis. Bruce Springsteen released the single “Streets of Minneapolis,” in which he condemns the actions of ICE and related agencies as “state terror” and addresses the deaths of Pretti and Renee Good. Springsteen’s song was written immediately after the incident and was written, recorded and released within days – an unusually quick musical commentary on a political event.
Other voices from the music and cultural sector had also previously expressed their solidarity with the protest movements. The debate over ICE’s role in Minneapolis has long since become a larger cultural issue. In addition to musical contributions, athletes, actors and musicians commented on the incidents and called for a political and legal investigation into the fatal shots.
