On Tuesday, January 31, the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Chamber of Commerce (KVK) and the various professional associations signed the Covenant for Protection
visiting addresses of political office holders in Trade Register agreed. As a result, for example, aldermen and council members and their partners/housemates with their own business can easily protect their visiting address in the Trade Register from now on.

Minister Hanke Bruins Slot: ‘It is really worrying that measures like this are necessary. Threats from political office holders, online and offline, are unacceptable. Protecting visiting addresses in the Trade Register makes working safer for council members and their families, for example. This helps to protect their living environment’.

Security of political office holders

Almost half (49%) of decentralized political office holders such as mayors,
water board administrators and members of parliament have had to deal with aggression or
harassment. In 2014 this was still 26%. There has been a significant increase in the last two years
of less serious and perceived serious incidents*.

Chamber of Commerce (KVK):

“Unfortunately, harassment and various forms of home threats are becoming more and more common. Chamber of Commerce
believes it is important that political office holders fulfill their social role in a safe environment
and applauds the fact that there are now legal options to remove their visiting address
to fence.’

Professional associations of political office holders

The covenant has been signed by the following professional associations or representatives of professional groups: the Dutch Society of Mayors (NGB), the administrative representative on behalf of the King’s Commissioners, the Kring Presidents of Water Boards (KVW), the Aldermen’s Association, the administrative representative on behalf of deputies, the Association of Daily Directors of Water Boards, the Dutch Association for Council Members, Statenlidnu and the Association for the Advocacy of General Managers of Water Boards.

Trade register data vision

Protecting the visiting address of political office holders and their partners/housemates in the Trade Register is part of the Trade Register Data Vision of the Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. The Trade Register of the Chamber of Commerce is an important source for safe and responsible business. In recent years, however, more and more entrepreneurs have suffered from unwanted use of their business data. Minister Adriaansens (EZK) is therefore taking 8 measures in the Trade Register, so that the privacy and therefore also the safety of entrepreneurs will increase. At the same time, it remains possible to check certain data in order to maintain legal certainty in economic transactions and to combat fraud.
