Promoted Molenbeek ensures transfer record in Belgium: Lyon tricks with Nuamah loan

Shooting star in Denmark

Newcomer RWD Molenbeek has set a surprising transfer record in Belgium: Ghanaian shooting star Ernest Nuamah (19) has been signed by FC Nordsjaelland for 25 million euros. Bonuses can increase the sum to up to 30 million euros. The attacker has never been with the Brussels-region club and probably never will be.

Nuamah, who from now on is both the most expensive entry in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League and the most expensive exit in the Danish Superligaen, is loaned directly to Olympique Lyon for one season. Like RWD Molenbeek, the Ligue 1 club is owned by US businessman John Textor and his holding company Eagle Football, which also owns Crystal Palace and Botafogo Rio de Janeiro.

The – at least on paper – Nuamah’s detour to Lyon has a simple background: Olympique is the focus of the French financial control authority DNCG. “OL will be monitored very closely this summer. That’s why Lyon have taken some complicated measures that should allow them to sign the loaned players on a permanent basis next summer once their finances look better,” explains Ronan Caroff, Area Manager Transfermarkt France. “This is a really complicated summer for her. They have to make these weird deals to bypass the DNCG.”

The financially troubled French can at least show a plus of almost 48 million euros in this transfer window. Next year, Nuamah will then be committed for the same amount that Molenbeek has now invested. The top talent joined Nordsjaelland from Ghana in early 2022, where Nuamah quickly exploded, registering 20 goals and five assists in 49 games.
