Acceleration is needed when setting up new nature, according to the annual Nature Progress Report. In 2021, the provinces set up 1,922 extra hectares of nature. That is less than the years before. The agreement is that another 34,432 hectares of new nature will be added within six years. This will only work if the provinces accelerate and together with the central government can find a solution to the bottlenecks, such as a lack of capacity and rising land prices.

Since 2013, the central government and the provinces have been committed to the creation of new nature within the Netherlands Nature Network. Until 2028, this should yield about 80,000 ha of new nature. Central government and provinces report annually on progress.
