Professional Samuel Asamoah was seriously injured in a second division game in China. The international player from Togo suffered a broken neck – his club fears dire consequences.

Pushed in a duel, head first against an LED board: 31-year-old Samuel Asamoah was seriously injured during a game in the Chinese League One. Video footage shows how the defensive midfielder from Guangxi Pingguo was thrown off balance in a duel with an opponent on Sunday and crashed into the advertising board installed on the side of the pitch.

As his club subsequently announced, Asamoah suffered fractures in his neck and nerve damage in the accident. He was operated on. The association’s statement states that he runs the risk of “suffering severe paraplegia.” He will definitely be out for the rest of the season – according to the club, his future career may also be at stake. According to the Chinese news portal “The Paper”, which cites the country’s football authorities, the LED board was set up three meters from the field boundary in accordance with the rules. The player involved, Zhang Zhixiong of Chongqing Tonglianglong club, was booked for the foul.

Asamoah played for a long time in Belgium at VV St. Truiden and later three years for FC Universitatea Craiova in Romania before moving to China at the beginning of the year. He appeared six times for the Togo national team.
