The Frenchman, a man in his thirties who has not been named, was driving on the A131 highway near the French city of Le Havre (Seine-Maritime department) on Tuesday around 6.15 pm when he was captured on camera by the road police. The man drove no less than 224 kilometers per hour with his Mercedes (an AMG A45 S) in a place where 130 was the limit.

“It concerns a professional football player,” the gendarmerie told local media. “He had to catch a flight to rejoin his team, a club outside the European Union. He had to play a match the next day.”

However, the police did not listen to the excuse, especially when it turned out that the man’s driver’s license had actually already been revoked for a previous violation. “There will certainly be criminal prosecution,” it said.
