Product of the week: Bermuda shorts

What is it:

Like many other classic pieces of clothing, Bermuda shorts have their origins in the military: they were designed for the British Army, which needed a uniform for the tropical weather in the British colonies. At the beginning of the 20th century, the trousers were adapted for business people and later for tourists, making them an integral part of fashion. The shorts gained increasing popularity and today the look is a must-have in men’s and women’s wardrobes. The term ‘Bermuda’ usually refers to knee-length shorts, which often fall into the holidaywear or tailoring categories.

Why you should order them:

Unlike other shorts, which are usually cut much shorter, Bermuda shorts are the ideal length if you want to cover more skin. The versatile designs mean that the trousers cannot be assigned to a specific category: Bermuda shorts range from casual sportswear to a statement piece in a catwalk collection. The styles and designs vary so much that there is a suitable model of shorts for every brand identity.

Where we saw them:

Given the numerous tailoring looks on the catwalks of the SS24 collections, it was to be expected that Bermuda shorts would also appear in the designers’ collections. Many kept the classic cut of the trousers and sharp creases and clear shapes could be seen at Burberry, Simone Rocha and LGN Louis Gabriel Nouchi. Marimekko, Givenchy and Sacai, on the other hand, opted for oversized silhouettes that made Bermuda shorts more casual and paired them with matching shirts. For Wales Bonner and Paolina Russo, the look took on sporty features, which was rounded off with hoodies and prints.

How to style them:

For a casual look, Bermuda shorts pair well with a linen shirt or loose-fitting t-shirt – perfect for the beach or everyday wear. Pair with a leather crossbody bag and sneakers for a stylish outfit. For a streetwear look, the shorts can be paired with an oversized printed shirt, sneakers and high socks. If you want to be more formal, the Bermuda can be combined with a matching blazer and elegant leather shoes.
