A very thin offside decision against Union Berlin in the home game against FC Bayern (2:2) caused new anger over the video evidence. Trainer icon Peter Neururer agrees with the criticism.

“The fact that the VAR doesn’t give this goal is a scandal for me. That has absolutely nothing to do with offside and justice and similar things,” Peter Neururer let off steam in his “Wettfreunde” column.

Union’s supposed opening goal in the ninth minute by Ilyas Ansah was disallowed due to offside after the video referee intervened. This was barely visible to the naked eye on the television images with the calibrated line.

“Not noticeable, but pro-Bayern. Okay, someone who isn’t necessarily a fan of Bayern would say that. But let’s leave it that way,” commented Neururer smugly on the scene.

Steffen Baumgart, coach of the Berlin team, expressed himself even more clearly on “Sky” after the final whistle. “The first goal is a goal. Going offside because of those five millimeters meant someone was drinking paint. I’m sorry,” the 53-year-old rumbled.

Video: Baumgart angry about being offside: “Unbearable!”

Neururer can understand the frustration: “We introduced VAR in 2017 and since then we have had discussions every match day, a thousand times more than before. We wanted more justice and what have we got? Justice or injustice has remained, exactly as it was before. Things are revealed that don’t necessarily have to be revealed. Does that help the sport, yes or no? I say: It doesn’t help the sport.”

Neururer asks “motivation question” at FC Bayern

Neururer also gave his two cents on the sporting events at the Alte Försterei, where FC Bayern dropped points for the first time this season.

“Absolutely fair. In the first half, for me personally, Union was clearly the better team, Bayern of course overslept a little, that’s a question of motivation,” the cult coach pointed out.

Neururer’s final classification of the surprising draw: “Paris Saint-Germain during the week and then comes Union. If you can live with it, you have to live with it. However, Bayern’s quality is enough, then they won’t lose a game like that.”
