Private sales on eBay have been free of charge since March 1st – under these conditions

Around eleven percent of their proceeds had to be paid by private sellers on eBay by the end of February – these costs have recently been eliminated. Commercial sales, on the other hand, will continue to be settled by the trading platform.

Special services remain chargeable

The new regulation is unlimited in time, but initially only applies in Germany, the third-largest market with eBay users: eBay is only larger in the USA and Great Britain, although the platform should not be confused with eBay classifieds, operated by the Norwegian company Adevinta . Similar to Amazon, eBay enables private and commercial sales of goods and thus pursues a different concept than eBay classifieds. In order to finally end the confusion between the two platforms, the operators have agreed that eBay classifieds will be renamed Kleinanzeige.de by 2024. This is reported by the information portal FOCUS.

With the elimination of fees for private use of eBay, since the beginning of March it has been possible to upload 320 offers per month free of charge. From the 321st offer, a fee of 50 cents will be charged. In addition, subtitles, the classification of a product in a second category, the active advertising of an article, the establishment of a minimum price for auctions and the Gallery Plus option are subject to a fee for all users, as the company informs.

Private sales are intended to boost commercial trade

According to the Managing Director of eBay Germany, Oliver Klinck, the innovation is a long-term investment in the platform’s entire marketplace business. The aim is to increase the number of commercial sales that are still subject to a fee by promoting private sales and to expand the variety of offers: “We see that private sellers are also much more active as buyers. Those who sell on eBay also shop twice as much as the shoppers who just shop,” says Klinck. Private trade accounts for around 20 percent of all transactions transacted on eBay. The change makes sense right now because, according to a YouGov survey, families in Germany are currently missing around 180 euros a month in an environment of high inflation rates: “Therefore, there is a great need in Germany to generate additional income through private sales,” he said he is quoted by FOCUS.
