The 29-year-old man is suspected of being involved in a large-scale drug trafficking. He was finally arrested after a house search in his apartment in Vienna where significant amounts of drugs were found. The man is currently staying in the prison of Kornneuburg in Austria. With a weight of almost 300 kilos, he is the heaviest prisoner in the country. He initially stayed in pre -trial detention in the prison of Josefstadt. But because a standard bed in that prison could no longer keep the man and even threatened to collapse, the prisoner was transferred.
Specially welded bed and care 24 hours a day
There is now a specially welded bed in his cell in the prison of Kornneuburg. There the man would receive care from an external company 24 hours a day. The costs for care and support amount to around 1,800 euros per day, or around 55,000 euros per month. That while a ‘normal’ prisoner costs around 180 euros a day.

There is now a lot of criticism of those enormous amounts.
