A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to fifteen months in prison, of which six months are conditional, for violence against his parents in Emmen and several other criminal offenses.

The court found that attempted serious assault on his father, assault on his mother, vandalism and various traffic offenses had been proven. The sentence is lower than the demand of the Public Prosecution Service, which had demanded three years in prison, two years of which were conditional. According to the judge, there is insufficient evidence for an attempted manslaughter on the father.

The violence against the parents took place in September last year. The man was under the influence of drugs and demanded his bicycle key. When he didn’t get it, he kicked open the fence door and grabbed his mother by the throat.

Shortly afterwards there was a confrontation with his father. Outside the garden, the suspect stabbed him twice in the abdomen with a sharp object.

In addition to the violence against his parents, the man was also convicted of other criminal offenses. In January 2025, for example, he committed joyriding, drove under the influence and exhibited reckless driving, resulting in his father’s car becoming a total loss.

Earlier, in August, the suspect had already destroyed a bedroom window of the parental home to gain entry.

The man started using soft drugs at a young age and later became addicted to hard drugs. He has been admitted to an addiction clinic several times, but without lasting results.

The court emphasizes the importance of treatment. During a three-year probationary period, the man must cooperate with admission to a clinic and submit to drug checks.
