Prison and community service for stalking ex-girlfriend: ‘He created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation’

According to the judge, a 22-year-old man from the municipality of Midden-Drenthe stalked his ex-girlfriend from Beilen in a very disturbing manner. He went far beyond the victim’s stated limits. The man was sentenced to 180 hours of community service and a suspended prison sentence of three months.

The sentence is equal to the demand of the Public Prosecution Service (OM). At the beginning of last year, the twenty-something could not digest the fact that his on-again, off-again relationship with the Beilense had now really ended. He called her constantly and sent her WhatsApp and text messages that became increasingly threatening in tone. He also showed up at her home and contacted her friends and family.

The woman indicated several times that she was not pleased with this. Despite her defenses, the man continued. The man was finally arrested in early March last year after he crashed her with his car on a cycle path. He got out and put a pellet gun to his own head. “If you want peace, you will get it, here and now,” he said. The woman took this as very threatening and went to the police.

The man was also sentenced for assault at a riding school. He hit an alleged new friend of the woman in the head. And the 22-year-old should not have had the pellet gun in his possession. The man must undergo treatment and he has been banned from alcohol and drugs. In addition, he is not allowed to enter the victim’s street or seek contact with her.
