Prins Bernhardweg or Joke Folmerweg? Couple on Schiermonnikoog calls for name change. ‘She deserves it more’

Annelies and Thijs de Boer ask the municipal council and the municipal council to rename the Prins Bernhardweg on Schiermonnikoog into the Joke Folmerweg.

‘It recently became known that Prince Bernhard was a member of the NSDAP in Germany, Hitler’s party. Joke Folmer, an important resistance woman, passed away on Schiermonnikoog in December 2022. It may be possible to rename the road,” writes the couple, locally known for the Shell Museum that they run.

“Joke Folmer deserves it more than Prince Bernhard,” says Annelies de Boer. Juliana’s husband had a special bond with Schiermonnikoog. The prince regularly came hunting there and often stayed at the Van der Werff hotel. “We had a very positive conversation with the mayor. She has been to us and fully supports our idea. But she also said that this should be discussed in the city council.”

The Prins Bernhardweg leads on the east side of the village of Schiermonnikoog to beach pavilion De Marlijn. The name change proposal is included as a letter on the agenda of the council meeting of Tuesday, November 28. It is then up to council factions to make the point open for discussion. De Boer: “We have sent our idea to all council members, but have not yet received any response from them.”
