‘Prieke’ chosen as favorite West Frisian word: “Is still often used”

More than 2700 people participated in the election of the most favorite West Frisian word. The word ‘prieke’ emerged as the winner.

The word got out with 21 percent of the votes prieke way above it. In Dutch, this word means to spill or mess. The word ended in second place scruffy, also called fat or cool, with 15 percent of the vote. In third place nice looking with 14 percent of the vote.

In 2014, during the election of the most beautiful word of North Holland the word scruffy still the big winner with 63 percent.

“It’s a nice and funny word”, says Ina Broekhuizen-Slot about the word prieke. She is more or less the godmother of the West Frisian dialect and has been involved in Creative West Frisian for many years. “I think the word is often used by mothers with children. Everyone still knows that word. It is a word that could also work well in Dutch.”

“It also sounds friendly when you tell your children,” she continues. She finds that friendly less in the word scruffy to sit. “The word doesn’t suit me either. It has a negative connotation for me. Skoft, comes from withers and means villain or crook in Dutch. I would rather use pure or bar. But that’s my opinion.”
