Price tag of 31.25 million euros: Ajax completes top transfer Steven Bergwijn

It took a long time, but the transfer of Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham Hotspur to Ajax is final. For a record amount of 31.25 million euros, the national champion takes over the 22-time international from Spurs. Bergwijn has signed a five-year contract.

Ajax also wanted to bring Bergwijn to Amsterdam last season, but then the transfer broke down because of the asking price. The amount that Ajax now pays is a record in the Eredivisie. Sébastien Haller, recently sold to Borussia Dortmund, was Ajax’s most expensive purchase in the Eredivisie with 22.5 million euros. The striker was sold to the German top club for 31 million euros this week.

Bergwijn (24) returns to Ajax on familiar territory. He played in the youth academy for six years before moving to PSV in the summer of 2011. He broke through in Eindhoven, after which Tottenham bought him in the winter of 2020 for thirty million euros. He then signed a contract until mid-2025.

In the Premier League, Bergwijn was more often on the bench than he was allowed to start in the base. In 2.5 years he started 25 times and came on as a substitute in 35 competition matches. He scored seven goals.

More top transfers

More lucrative transfers are on the way. For example, Manchester United seems to want to pull out the wallet to take Lisandro Martinez away from Ajax. The new club of trainer Erik ten Hag would be willing to pay fifty million euros for the defender.

Ajax itself hopes to be able to complete the arrival of Owen Wijndal soon. The left back of AZ may make the switch for a limited transfer fee of ten million.
