President of the United States Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday that affects college sports in the United States.
The order directs universities to create rules according to which university athletes would be allowed to play at the university for a maximum of five years. In addition, university athletes would be allowed to change schools only once before graduation without sanctions.
The rule changes are scheduled to enter into force on August 1. However, if a school plays an athlete who doesn’t meet the new regulations, it could lose federal funding.
ESPNseveral lawyers who work with universities and their athletes believe the president’s orders would be unconstitutional if tested in court.
For Trump, the lawyers’ view does not come as a surprise. The president already acknowledged in March, when he first spoke about the new executive order, that his administration would likely be challenged in court.
Trump has threatened schools with the loss of federal funding before.
For example, he tried to withdraw funding from Harvard when the prestigious university allowed anti-Gaza war and pro-Palestinian demonstrations on its campus. According to Trump, Harvard was guilty of anti-Semitism.
However, in September, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s plans to end Harvard’s funding.
