Premier League, Suning’s Chinese TV loses the case

PPTV had not paid two installments for the English league rights during the 2020 pandemic stop

Suning-owned Chinese broadcaster PPTV was ordered to pay the English Premier League approximately € 188 million ($ 213 million) by the London High Court for failing to comply with the league’s TV rights agreements.

the decision

The Premier terminated the deal last year after PPTV failed to pay two installments of the royalties due, citing a change to the schedule caused by the forced 100-day hiatus for the Covid pandemic in 2020 and the lack of fans in stadiums when the games resumed in June. The judge rejected the arguments of the streaming service of the Inter owners, also condemning them to pay interest and legal fees. The judge also pointed out in its ruling that the Chinese broadcaster “did not pay a substantial amount of outstanding legal fees” owed to its lawyers last year.
