Just a year ago, Liverpool FC and coach Arne Slot celebrated the Premier League title together. Now the master trainer has to go.

Premier League club Liverpool FC are parting ways with coach Arne Slot with immediate effect. The club officially announced this on Saturday. “Liverpool FC can confirm that Arne Slot is resigning from his position as head coach with immediate effect and that the search for a successor is already underway,” the club said in a statement. According to a report by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the previous Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola is said to be the favorite to take over the slot.

“It goes without saying that this was a difficult decision for us as a club,” the club owners’ joint statement continued. “The contribution Arne made to Liverpool FC during the time he was with us was significant, meaningful and – most importantly for the fans and ourselves – successful.”

Disappointing season

The Merseyside club has had a disappointing season. As defending champions, the “Reds” only finished fifth in the Premier League and only managed to qualify for the Champions League. In the premier class (against PSG) and in the FA Cup (against Manchester City) it ended in the quarter-finals.

Slot took over the club in the summer of 2024 as the successor to the resigned Jürgen Klopp and celebrated the championship title in his first season. In the second year under his leadership, however, he was unable to continue his success – and now has to leave. In the club announcement, the club expresses its recognition to the Dutchman. “Nevertheless, the decision we have come to is based on the belief that the team’s course can best be corrected by a change of direction,” the club said.

“Arne leaves us with our gratitude, with a Premier League title on his resume and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcome at Anfield,” the statement concludes.
