Premier League hits a billion on transfers – ‘earning more than ever’

Only LaLiga has ever been faster

Over 1,000,000,000 euros for access! The Premier League already broke the billion mark in transfer spending on July 16 – never before has this sum been reached faster in England. It featured Erling Haaland, Darwin Núñez and Richarlison before Kalidou Koulibaly’s €38m move from SSC Napoli to Chelsea ensured the world’s richest league hit the billion mark for the ninth summer in a row.

For comparison: In this transfer phase, the 20 English first division clubs have so far invested more money than Serie A, Bundesliga and LaLiga combined. However, the record for the fastest reaching the billion mark remains wafer-thin in Spain.

Daniel Busch, Area Manager Transfermarkt UK, says: “Confidence in the market is back. The effects of Covid-19 on the number of spectators and thus also on the balance sheets have finally disappeared again and the clubs are making more money than ever before Premier League announced plans to break the €1.6bn spending record set in the summer of 2017.

TV money: Premier League earns more abroad than in England

It is not at all unlikely that this record will fall, as Manchester United and Chelsea have so far been reluctant and Manchester City has had a substantial transfer plus despite Haaland’s commitment. A lot can also be expected from the newly rich Newcastle United, who will also play in the national colors of Saudi Arabia this season – the league is swimming in money.

“From August, TV money for international rights will increase by 25 per cent to £5.05 billion for the period 2022-2025. It is the first time that overseas rights have brought in more money than national ones, which at five be valued at billions of pounds. This distribution is very unusual and shows the league’s appeal as a global brand. Including the commercial rights, this creates a package of over ten billion pounds for the next three years – a remarkable increase at a time when TV money is on the decline in many leagues,” says England expert Busch.

Spending record: LaLiga broke the billion mark even faster in 2019

It’s hard to believe, but LaLiga was even faster in 2019. In a summer in which Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona outbid each other with transfers, the billion was cracked on July 14th. João Félix, Eden Hazard, Frenkie de Jong, Luka Jović, Éder Militão and Antoine Griezmann – the latter joined Barça from Atlético for €120m on July 14, 2019 – were mainly responsible for this.

In the remaining month and a half of the transfer phase in 2019, if you will, the Spaniards were frugal and only paid €350m for new players. The highest spending in the Bundesliga in a summer also dates from 2019 and amounts to 747 million euros. Of course, it is important to mention the balance, which was a transfer minus of -176 million euros in the Bundesliga’s record summer. In the Premier League, the difference between transfer income and expenses is likely to be over a billion euros this time. The next milestone should be 2,000,000,000 euros.
