Chelsea FC suffered a bitter derby defeat in front of their new coach Liam Rosenior. The club world champion lost 1:2 (0:0) to his city rivals FC Fulham after an early sending off against the Spaniard Marc Cucurella. Meanwhile, Manchester City had to be content with a 1-1 (1-0) draw against Brighton & Hove Albion under German coach Fabian Hürzeler. Bayern loanee João Palhinha also scored well for Tottenham.
Rosenior is the successor to the dismissed Enzo Maresca and comes from French club Racing Strasbourg. However, he still watched the Blues’ game at Fulham from the stands, with interim coach Calum McFarlane standing on the sidelines. The game was only a good 20 minutes old when defender Cucurella was shown the red card for an emergency stop. Raúl Jiménez gave the home team the lead in the 55th minute before Liam Delap equalized (72′). The winning goal for the Cottagers was scored by the in-form Harry Wilson (81st). In the English Premier League table, both teams are now tied on 31 points.
Man City fails in the championship race – spectacle in Newcastle
Pep Guardiola and Manchester City suffered a setback in the fight for the championship. Although the Citizens took the lead thanks to Erling Haaland’s 150th competitive goal (41′), they conceded Kaoru Mitoma’s equalizer after the break (60′). After the 1-1 draw, leaders Arsenal have the chance to extend their lead to eight points in the top game against Liverpool on Thursday evening (to the table).
A spectacle occurred at Newcastle United’s home game. Without the previously substituted German striker Nick Woltemade, coach Eddie Howe’s team celebrated a crazy last-minute victory. Until the 90th minute, the hosts were behind 2-3 against Leeds United. In the end it was 4:3. Bruno Guimarães equalized with a penalty in the first minute of added time. In the twelfth minute of injury time, Harvey Barnes scored the winning goal for Newcastle. Woltemade was substituted in the 75th minute without scoring.
The duel between AFC Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur was similarly spectacular. In stoppage time, Antoine Semenyo scored the 3-2 winning goal for the home team in what was probably his last game for the club. The attacker will soon complete his medical at Man City. Previously, ex-Munich players Mathys Tel (5th) and Palhinha had scored a remarkable overhead kick (78th) for Spurs. The other goals for the Cherries were scored by Evanilson (22nd) and Eli Kroupi (36th). In addition, Manchester United drew 2-2 with Burnley FC in the first game after the dismissal of Rúben Amorim. Former Leipzig player Benjamin Sesko scored twice.
