The obligation to keep poultry in cages due to bird flu has been lifted nationally. This only applied in the Gelderse Vallei, the region where many poultry farms are located.

State Secretary Silvio Erkens (Agriculture, VVD) has consulted experts who now estimate the risk of bird flu as ‘moderate to low’.

Greater risk of spread

Companies and hobbyists were allowed to send their poultry outside again at the end of April, except in the Gelderse Vallei, because relatively many poultry companies are located there. The risk of bird flu spreading is therefore greater than in the rest of the Netherlands. The cage and shielding obligation therefore continued to apply there for longer.
