It will not be a white Christmas in Zoetermeer, but it may be the coldest in fifteen years. That’s what Abe Weenink predicts weatheronline.nl. Grab your thickest Christmas sweater from the closet and, just to be on the safe side, get your skates out of the grease for after Christmas…

Maybe you spend all Christmas indoors around the fireplace, cheese fondue or the gourmet set, but if you want to take a walk in the Balijbos, dress warmly. The temperatures are dropping below zero and you can feel it!
Increasingly colder air
Abe: “The wind turned to the east last weekend and in the first days of this week the wind will remain easterly to northeasterly. This means that increasingly colder air is entering the country. On Monday it will still be 6 or 7 degrees, on Tuesday it will be a maximum of about 5 degrees and on Wednesday it will not be warmer than 2 to 4 degrees. At night the temperature is often just above freezing.”
Sunglasses and thick sweater
According to Abe, it will really get colder from Christmas Eve onwards. “Christmas Day and Boxing Day will be cold with temperatures only reaching 1 or 2 degrees above zero during the day. In the evening, night and early morning it will freeze 2 to 4 degrees in many places. In the east of the country it can be -5 degrees locally. This could easily be the coldest Christmas in fifteen years.”

According to Abe, the perceived temperature in the early Christmas mornings is around 10 degrees below zero. A thick winter coat, scarf and gloves are definitely recommended. During the day the weather is radiant and that doesn’t happen often during Christmas.
Skating fun in Zoetermeer?
Okay, so a scarf, thick sweater and winter coat can come out of the closet, but what about the skates?
Abe: “Due to the cold weather, you can skate on flooded rinks at the end of the week. The night leading up to Saturday also seems to be cold, so you will probably be able to tie your skates on a flooded meadow on Saturday morning.”
Who knows, you might exchange gourmet food for Zoetermeer skating fun at the end of this week! Is there no natural ice? Then go skating on the covered rink of SilverDome in Zoetermeer.
