Portugal are U17 world champions for the first time. In the final of the 2025 U17 World Cup, coach José Lima’s team defeated Austria 1-0 on Thursday evening at the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar. Benfica’s offensive talent Anísio scored the decisive goal in the 32nd minute. It was the 17-year-old’s seventh goal of the tournament – only ÖFB attacker Johannes Moser (17) scored more. Like Germany in 2023, Portugal won the European Championship and World Cup in one year. A few hours earlier, Italy had secured the bronze medal with a 4-2 defeat against Brazil.
Austria’s U17 team had already celebrated a historic success by reaching the World Cup final. Previously, no youth team from the Austrian Football Association had managed to reach a World Cup final in any age group.
The Austrians had won all games at the U17 World Cup, in which 48 teams took part for the first time, before the duel against Portugal. In the knockout phase there were victories against Tunisia (2:0), England (4:0), Japan (1:0) and in the semifinals against Italy (2:0). In the group phase, coach Hermann Stadler’s team only conceded one goal in a 4-1 win against New Zealand.
