Italy’s football players missed the early move into the European Championship quarter-finals. A later goal later snatched the team of coach Andrea Soncin the victory.
The quarter-finals already seemed to be within reach, but the Italian women’s national team conceded a late neck stroke on Monday evening in their second group game at the European Championship. At the end of Portugal it was 1-1 (0-0) after Diana Gomes had equalized for the Iberer in the 89th minute. Italy had previously taken the lead through a dream goal by Cristiana Girelli (70th).
The team around Bavaria player Arianna Caruso is now on four points after the opening victory against Belgium, Portugal has a counter in the account. Both teams hope for the quarter -final ticket before the last game.
The Spanish national team already has this safe after the draw in Geneva. The world champions previously won 6-2 against Belgium and, with six points, can no longer be replaced by one of the first two ranks in the group. Belgium has again left. Italy meets Spain on Friday, Portugal is dealing with the Belgians.
The “Seleção the Quinas” had fought for the draw against Italy with a passionate appearance. The Italians had the better chances, like through Cecilia Salvai, who only hit the latte (21st), but the defense around the large goalkeeper Patrícia Morais kept tight. The 33-year-old was powerless against Girelli’s wonderful Schlenzer in the corner.
Portugal, however, did not give up: Diana Silva’s outline initially brought the stadium to shake, but according to video evidence, no recognition was right (80th). However, the situation heralded a turbulent final phase, in which Carole initially failed on the aluminum (88.) and Diana Gomes then equalized. Italy gave two good opportunities for victory in added time. Portugal’s Ana Borges also saw the yellow-red card (90. +6).
