Portugal gives Abramovich permission to sell Chelsea | Football

The country’s foreign ministry says the transaction in the proposed form does not fall under the sanctions imposed on the Russian-born after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Abramovich has been a Portuguese citizen since last year.

The British government previously agreed and issued the permit that will allow the English club to transfer to a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly. Earlier, the Premier League approved the acquisition, which involves an amount of 4.25 billion pounds (almost 5 billion euros).

Sufficient guarantees

According to the Portuguese ministry, there are sufficient guarantees that the proceeds of the sale will benefit humanitarian purposes and not the owner of the club. Chelsea was put up for sale by Abramovich in March after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Chelsea finished third in the Premier League this season, behind Manchester City and Liverpool.
