Not every course in Formula 1 stays on the calendar permanently. A track in Portugal will replace the race in the Netherlands in the future.

Formula 1 has announced that it will return to Portimão in Portugal in 2027 and 2028. The Portuguese Grand Prix will replace the previous venue Zandvoort in the Netherlands, whose contract is expiring. This decision comes at a time when interest in hosting Formula 1 races is particularly high.

Portimão already hosted Formula 1 in 2020 and 2021, when European race tracks were increasingly used during the corona pandemic. During these years, Lewis Hamilton won both races, back then in a Mercedes. In addition to Portimão, races also took place in Porto, Monsanto and Estoril in the history of the racing series.

Formula 1 managing director Stefano Domenicali said: “The interest in holding a Formula 1 Grand Prix is higher than it has ever been before.” Potential new venues for future races also include countries such as South Africa, Thailand and South Korea. This development shows that Formula 1 wants to continue to expand worldwide and is looking for new markets.
