Pony.AI is positioning itself as a serious challenger in the global autonomous driving market and could even overtake tech giants like Waymo.

• New star in the robotaxi sky?
• Pony.AI is committed to rapid expansion
• Could Pony.AI overtake Waymo & Co.?

This is Pony.AI

Pony.AI was founded in Silicon Valley in 2016 and is now one of the world’s leading companies in the field of autonomous mobility. The company develops technologies and services for robotaxis, autonomous trucks and private vehicles. The aim is to develop the safest self-driving systems in the world. By April 2023, Pony.AI’s vehicles had covered over 21 million kilometers autonomously, including more than one million test kilometers and around 200,000 paid robotaxi rides. For its innovative strength, the company was even included in CNBC’s list of the 50 most disruptive technology companies in 2022, where it reached tenth place.

Expansion in sight

Pony.AI has also launched an impressive expansion and production offensive in recent months. The company only accelerated mass production of its 7th generation robotaxis in August. By the end of the year, the fleet is expected to grow from over 200 to over 1,000 vehicles. In parallel, Pony.AI was able to consolidate its presence in all four Chinese metropolises – Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou – and offer fully driverless commercial services there. This makes Pony.AI the only company that has already implemented this operation in all major cities in China.

But expansion is also progressing in other areas of the world. In Qatar, Pony.AI recently launched a partnership with national transport company Mowasalat to test autonomous vehicles on public roads in Doha. The initiative is part of Qatar’s Vision 2030 and is intended to contribute to a sustainable, autonomous transport system in the long term, according to the press release.

Shortly afterwards, Pony.AI announced its entry into the Singapore market in cooperation with ComfortDelGro, the largest local transport service provider. The two companies plan to initially offer autonomous mobility services in the Punggol region, supporting Singapore’s goal of an intelligently connected, sustainable transport infrastructure. In addition, Pony.AI is continuing to expand to South Korea, Luxembourg and Dubai.

This is how the second quarter of 2025 went for Pony AI

The financial results have also recently been convincing: the company was able to make significant progress in the second quarter of 2025 and underpin its growth targets. The number of registered users increased by 136 percent compared to the previous year.

Financially, Pony.AI was able to increase its total revenue by 76 percent. The core business with robotaxi rides developed particularly strongly: revenue from fare collections increased by more than 300 percent compared to the same quarter in the previous year.

Can Pony.AI overtake Waymo & Co.?

Waymo has proven to be the top dog for autonomous driving in the USA: With around 1,500 vehicles, more than ten million paid trips and an impressive safety record, the Google offshoot dominates the market. But while Waymo continues to work on profitability, the Chinese challenger Pony.AI is rapidly catching up, as Gründerszene explains.

In contrast to Waymo, Pony.AI focuses on international expansion. This global footprint and close collaboration with automakers like GAC and BAIC give Pony.AI a key advantage: speed and scalability.

While Waymo relies on experience and technology, Pony.AI combines industrial efficiency with ambitious growth. If the expansion continues, the Chinese newcomer could soon seriously compete with the Silicon Valley giant – and redefine the future of autonomous driving.
