Polling stations closed in Brazil, countdown to result | Abroad

As is known, the left-wing ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (77) will take on the far right, outgoing president Jair Bolsonaro (67). Lula won the first round of the election on October 2, albeit by a smaller margin than what the polls had predicted.

The campaign was marred for months by mudslinging and social media misinformation. Both candidates fought for every vote until the last day. Bolsonaro regularly expressed doubts about the electoral system and hinted that he might not recognize the result. Some of his supporters openly called for a military coup.
