A Nicaraguan national player was targeted by the police immediately before an international match. The authorities arrived with several officers.
Shortly before kick-off of the World Cup qualifier between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, there was a police operation at the San José stadium. As several media outlets consistently report, officials and judicial staff entered the Nicaraguan team’s dressing room to arrest a player.
Police Director Marlon Cubillo explained the reason: “At the request of the person claiming maintenance, the court issued an order ordering the arrest of a member of the Nicaraguan delegation.” Who exactly it was remained unclear.
However, the situation did not escalate further. According to information, the player concerned settled the outstanding claim on site, which ultimately prevented an arrest. The professional was allowed to play for his country shortly afterwards.
The incident nevertheless caused displeasure among the Nicaraguan association. In a statement on The association is now calling for an investigation by the responsible sports authorities and FIFA.
This pushed the game itself into the background. Costa Rica won the match 4-1, but afterwards there is less talk about the sporting result than about the police operation that briefly overshadowed the entire event.
