Police: ‘Tweet enforcers about man harassing girls on beach can sow fear’

The police are not happy with a tweet that has now been deleted from enforcers from the municipality of Den Helder about a man who allegedly harassed girls on the beach of Julianadorp. According to the police, the tweet may sow fear and unrest.

The municipality’s enforcement department proudly tweeted on Saturday that it had stopped a man after a report from lifeguards. The man would ‘perform immoral acts towards girls/ladies on the beach’. He would also have filmed the girls. ‘Person handed over to police’, it reads further.

Police say they have indeed spoken to someone. But after viewing the images, there appeared to be no reason to consider the man, a 27-year-old, as a suspect. No report has been filed either.

The police spokesman therefore says he is not very happy with the tweet from enforcement. “They wanted to show the good cooperation, but have now tweeted quite a lot of details. This can lead to unnecessary fear and unrest among the beach guests,” says the spokesperson.

‘Three people felt unsafe’

In a response, the municipality of Den Helder says that the enforcers ‘acted in response to a report of the suspicious situation’. The spokesperson did not comment further on the matter. “The further handling is a matter for the police,” said the municipality.

Nor can the rescue brigade involved say much about the case, except that on Saturday afternoon three people reported to their beach post who felt unsafe on the beach. “We then called the police,” says one of the lifeguards.

The tweet has since been deleted.
