Police discover dozens of bodies in a state of decomposition in US funeral home | Abroad

Police in the US state of Indiana have launched an investigation into a funeral home where more than 30 bodies were found. Some would have been there for months and were in an advanced state of decomposition.

Police in Jeffersonville, a suburb of Louisville, made the macabre discovery after a report came in Friday night about a pungent corpse odor observed outside the Lankford funeral home.

Officers who entered the building in protective clothing discovered a total of 31 bodies scattered throughout the building. Some are said to have been in the funeral home since March, Officer Isaac Parker said. Police also found the cremated remains of another 16 people.

The owner of the funeral home has been questioned by the police since Friday and an investigation is underway. “Officers found a very unpleasant situation,” Parker said.

The remains were taken to the Clark County coroner’s office for identification. Police have urged anyone who may have information to contact the coroner’s office.

A woman who sent her brother’s body to the funeral home in April for cremation told local media that she is still waiting for his ashes. When she contacted the undertaker about why it was taking so long, he replied that he had “too much on his mind”.
