The police started the eviction of the activists in Sterrebos in Limburg on Tuesday morning. That is what the municipality of Sittard-Geleen has announced† Environmental activists have been occupying the forest since January 28 as a protest against a planned felling for the expansion of the adjacent car factory VDL Nedcar. The police pull the activists from the high trees, to which they have chained themselves with ropes and hammocks.

Simultaneously with the announcement of the eviction, Nedcar and the ecological foundation De Groene Sporenwolf (DGS) announced that they had reached agreement on compensation for the forest clearing. The car factory will partially transplant trees in the nearby Wolfrath area. Nedcar will also contribute ‘to the quality of life in and around the residential areas in the immediate vicinity of VDL Nedcar’. The ecological foundation has withdrawn an objection procedure at the Council of State.
