The 24-year-old is suspected of setting off an explosive at a deli in Plantage Kerklaan (Amsterdam East) in the early morning of September 2. More arrests cannot be ruled out.

In the same street, during the night of August 28 to 29, an explosive device went off at the Pizza Bakers restaurant, causing significant damage. On the night of August 31 to September 1, the attack occurred at the takeaway branch of the same restaurant chain, a few houses away.

Connection with other explosions

The explosion on the night of September 1 to 2 occurred at another company in Plantage Kerklaan, but the police suspect that there is a connection. The police also suspect a connection with the pizza chain in an explosion at Bever Sport aan de Overtoom.

Previously, a 14-year-old was caught red-handed when he tried to set off another explosive at a branch of the Pizza Bakers in the Plantage Kerklaan on the night of September 2 to 3. In November, a 17-year-old boy was arrested and suspected of involvement in this failed attack.

To restore public order in the city, mayor Femke Halsema closed four branches of the pizza chain for six months on September 12.

Bankruptcy upon closing

That would mean bankruptcy, the owners reported. The judge decided that two of these, including the heavily damaged restaurant in Plantage Kerklaan, could reopen.

At the end of November, Halsema decided that the last two branches could also open again.
