Police are full of questions about Jody Lukoki’s sudden death. Section on body should provide clarity

Mourning bands and a minute of silence for Lukoki at Cambuur-Willem II

It is by no means certain that the death of footballer Jody Lukoki is the result of a previous violent incident, in which the footballer may have been involved a week ago.

It is not even clear where that party was, where a fight is said to have started. The Central Netherlands police emphasizes this to this newspaper.

“We have information about a violent incident and are now investigating it. But there are still many questions,” said spokesman Wim Hoonhout. The police reported Monday that the violent incident in Flevoland would have taken place.

‘Infection and oxygen deficiency’

The footballer (29) of Ajax died on Monday morning. People from his immediate environment report that Lukoki was kicked and beaten at a party. Family members would also be involved. Lukoki was not treated for his injuries until later in hospital.

According to sources in his area, an infection and oxygen deficiency would have led to the amputation of a leg of Lukoki, who was recovering from a serious knee injury. They also point to a possible link with frequent use of nitrous oxide.

Lukoki fell into a coma and died on Monday morning. An autopsy is still being performed on his body to determine the cause of death.

‘Family is in shock’

His agent Menno Groenveld was unable to say anything about the alleged violent incident on Monday evening. He previously stated in De Telegraaf that he had been informed by his family about the death of Lukoki. “We as an agency are deeply shocked by this. The exact cause of death is not yet known to us. The family is in shock and very sad. Jody was a very happy boy, and had almost recovered from his injury.” FC Twente, Cambuur, Ajax and PEC Zwolle announced that they were saddened by his death.
