A statement by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who on Thursday called on Europeans to “punish” their “foolish” governments, has sparked controversy in Italy’s full election campaign. Italy, under the leadership of outgoing Prime Minister Mario Draghi, has so far unconditionally supported Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion, including by providing arms and humanitarian aid. That could well change if the right-wing, more Russian-minded coalition, which is leading the polls, comes to power in the September 25 parliamentary elections.
