The polar bear is the property of the business association in Emmen, but Laurens Meijer from that club is not at all angry. “I think this is funny, people must have had so much anticipation. And then also the link with the song The Polar Bear, truly a masterpiece of Dutch music. I can laugh about this.”

As far as Meijer is concerned, it is fine if a New Year’s Eve club temporarily takes care of the polar bear. “As long as it comes back in one piece.” And the entrepreneur has every confidence in that. “On camera images we were able to see how four or five people expertly dismantled the polar bear. It is a huge object. So they unscrewed the head and took off the legs. They are all separate elements. They handled it very calmly. .” Meijer expects that the polar bear will show up again somewhere during the New Year.

As far as we know, this is the first statue in Drenthe that has been hijacked by a New Year’s Eve club this year. Last week it seemed that TT artworks in Rolde, Grolloo and Borger were part of a New Year’s Eve stunt. These had disappeared from their pedestals. But it eventually turned out that the Toyists art movement had collected the works for restoration.

Elsewhere in the country, images and objects have disappeared, with indications that it was a New Year’s Eve stunt. For example, several art benches disappeared in the province of Groningen, it was reported RTV North over a week ago. Omroep Gelderland noted that three iron statues of a gorilla, elephant and lion are missing from Harderwijk. And one disappeared near Putten five meter high men’s bicycle. It is not the first time that this men’s bicycle has been temporarily moved. In May 2012, the bicycle was taken as a joke by the events committee of the Drentse Fietsvierdaagse in Westerbork.
