Points loss weak AZ against defensive SC Cambuur

The level of AZ against Cambuur was severely below par. As a result, the Alkmaarders’ series of six victories in the Eredivisie in a row came to an end tonight. The game ended as it began: 0-0.

Wednesday’s tough match against FC Twente still seemed to be in AZ’s legs, because it took quite a while before the first chance came. Striker Vangelis Pavladis forced Sonny Stevens to make a save just before half time with a hard shot into the short corner. There were few notable moments in the first half. The Frisians defended strongly and AZ struggled to get through.

The White greatest chance

After the break, the Alkmaarders had greater opportunities to take the lead. Nevertheless, the first danger came from Cambuur-speaker Michael Breij. He forced goalkeeper Peter Vindahl to make a great save. Hereafter, Pascal Jansen tried to force things and brought in Thijs Oosting and Albert Gudmundsson. A shot by Oosting then went just wide of the visitors’ goal.

Dani de Wit had the greatest opportunity for AZ in the 81st minute. He seemed to hit the target, but Stevens kept the ball out of his goal with a feline save. After this, the Alkmaarders didn’t have a chance anymore. A positive aspect of the draw is that the unbeaten status has been extended with a match by AZ.

AZ setup: Vindahl; Sugawara, Witry, Beukema, Wijndal; Midtsjø, Clasie, De Wit; Evjen (Oosting/65), Pavlidis (Gudmundsson/65), Karlsson
