The changes and production delay are regrettably reflected in the final result, writes Iltalehti editor Niilo Helminen.

Zendaya stars in Euphoria.

HBO Max’s hit series Euphoria season three started in April, and the reception has not been flattering.

Started in 2019 Euphoria has previously been considered a cult favorite that has won over viewers and critics alike. A make-up trend, various memes and Tiktok sounds have been created around it, and the series has also served as a springboard for several actors’ successful careers since then.

The themes discussed in the series, for example sex, violence and drugs, have caused a stir and criticism before, but at the same time, the series has also been praised for highlighting, for example, drug problems and mental health problems.

Season three feels like a shadow of the past, and I’m not alone in my opinion.

The start of the third season was waited for more than four years. Filming has been delayed, for example, by the death of actor Angus Cloud in 2023.

A lot has happened anyway.

Some of the actors from the previous seasons have left the series, and the music of Labrinth, who was responsible for the soundtracks of the previous seasons, will not be heard in the third season either.

The changes and production delay are regrettably reflected in the final result. When watching the first episodes, it seems that the treatment of themes continues in the most provocative ways, but the characters who have developed into adults from high school age seem to lack a soul.

Viewers and critics have given the third season somewhat more critical feedback. For example, Rue played by Zendaya ingesting drugs and Cassie played by Sydney Sweeney in a dog costume made Onlyfans content have shocked viewers.

When you watch the series, you inevitably wonder if the third season is a box office magnet, despite the hype and the obvious deterioration in quality, or if the third season was simply worth not doing.
