The aircraft had been on its way for just over an hour when it turned around over Groningen. The Air France passenger plane, an Airbus A220-300 with room for more than a hundred passengers, had taken off from Paris and was on its way to Copenhagen, Denmark. It is not known exactly how many people were on board.
How the smoke could have originated is still being investigated. A spokesperson for the Kennemerland Safety Region explains that they immediately scaled up when the plane announced that it wanted to make an emergency landing at Schiphol. “In addition to several fire engines and ambulances, a trauma helicopter was also deployed as a preventive measure. Fortunately, the aircraft ultimately landed safely on the Aalsmeer runway.”
The occupants were all able to leave the plane on their own, none of them had to be taken to the hospital. It is still unclear how and when they can continue their way to Copenhagen.
