The motion in question was submitted by SP MP Michiel van Nispen and states that the traffic fines should not rise with inflation in the coming years. He found that the fines were recently increased to close gaps in the budget. He thought that unacceptable and a majority of the House of Representatives agrees with him.
Freezing traffic fines
The motion for not making traffic fines more expensive received support from most parties in the Lower House and the parties that voted for the proposal together accounted for 109 seats. VVD, D66, CDA, JA21 and Volt voted against. Curious about what the biggest political parties have in store for motorists? You can read that here.
Van Nispen also stated in his motion that he realizes that the immediate reduction of the fines would cost too much money. That is why he goes back on an older plan from the Public Prosecution Service. In 2024 she proposed an indexation stop: not lower the fines, but also not increase. Ultimately, inflation then automatically ensures that the traffic fines become relatively less expensive.
Other motion in the Lower House
The freezing of traffic fines was not the only plan that Van Nispen submitted in the Lower House. Together with MP Lahlah (GroenLinks/PvdA) and El Abassi (DENK), he has submitted a motion to lower the increases of traffic fines, after reminders.
Only 11 focus flashes have already delivered this mega amount
His proposal is that amounts are increased by 20 euros after a first reminder and that after a second reminder, 20 percent of the outstanding amount will be added. At the moment, after a first reminder, 50 percent is increased and after a second reminder by 100 percent. This proposal has also been adopted.
The fact that these proposals have been adopted does not immediately mean that something about the traffic fines is changing. The motions of the House of Representatives only mean that the cabinet has to look seriously at the plans. Now that the elections have not been and we have a outgoing cabinet, we can still wait a while before the proposals are taken seriously.
