Pizza Hut Japan comes with rice base due to high wheat price | Abroad

Pizza Hut Japan will also offer rice-based pizza bases from next week. The new dishes are partly inspired by the sky-high grain prices. From 22 August, the chain’s menu will feature a selection of mini pizzas with a rice base with various toppings such as Ibérico pork or teriyaki chicken.

The rice pizzas will initially be available for a period of six weeks. The pizzas may remain on the menu longer. This also depends on the popularity of the pizzas.

According to the chain, they always look at how to make the dishes attractive to the Japanese consumer. Rice would be a “perfect fit”, according to Pizza Hut. The chain also admits that the increased grain prices are a reason to come up with alternatives.

The price of grain has skyrocketed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The war and sanctions against Russia have hit the grain exports of these major producers. The higher grain prices are being felt worldwide. Several companies indicate that they are looking for alternatives as a basis for bread, pastries, pasta and other foods.

The rice Pizza Hut plans to use in its pizzas will come from local producers. The price of rice has risen less rapidly than that of other grains. This is due to a combination of ample production and existing stocks.

By the way, the price of wheat has fallen again recently. This is mainly due to the deal that was made for the export of Ukrainian grain. Russia could also export more grain than anticipated. The demand for grain would also have decreased.
