Pilot project with drones on black dots expands

In Roeselare they will soon be able to tackle one of the most dangerous intersections in the province more quickly and better.

With the ‘Mobility Innovative Approaches’ project, the analysis looks like this: a computer model based on drone images shows how a cyclist just avoids being hit. Thanks to such camera and drone images, they can intervene proactively. Lydia Peeters : Flemish Minister of Mobility: “Based on the visual material, you can then see how, for example, cyclists come into conflict with motorized traffic. We see, for example, how many people take the wrong exit and thus become wrong-way drivers.”

Bad numbers

In the past, it took even deaths before an intersection was labeled dangerous. Now it has to be different. The accident figures this year in West Flanders are very bad. Together with Limburg, they are now introducing the new system here at an accelerated pace. “We actually have two testing grounds. One in Limburg, one in West Flanders. We have installed fixed cameras in West Flanders. Then you can see very well how all those vehicles and road users move. The Roeselare roundabout is a good example. It is a roundabout where several accidents have happened in the past.”

Only infrastructure adjustments based on drones and other cameras will not succeed. Driver behavior is still the biggest culprit. We can therefore expect even more and more intensive checks.
