With sweat and sometimes a tear, the 25th truck with relief supplies for Ukraine was loaded in the Schermer this week. Jan Pilkes and a group of volunteers from the Caritas foundation have been working overtime there since the start of the war. “I feel very sorry for those people, they have nothing there at all.”

Earlier this year we were even when loading the trucks. Then Jan’s foundation noticed that massive donations were being made. That has decreased a bit now. Still, he managed to get a full truck to Odessa again.

There are also farmers who founding van Pilkes wholeheartedly. “We get pallets with potatoes, beets and carrots. That’s just fantastic. Then they can eat again at the end of the week in Odessa. It is still very much needed.”

Structure

De Rijper has been committed to Ukraine since 1989. He hopes that the war will be over soon so that they can contribute to building the country. “And also so that we can calm down a bit.”

Pilkes receives help from about twenty volunteers, also from neighbor Aljona Terzi. She translates and has contacts in Odessa, the final destination of the truck full of relief supplies. “It gives me a very warm feeling because I come from Ukraine myself. I think it is very important that I can do everything I can to help my native country.”
