The struggle for pole position at the Grand Prix of the Emilia-Romagna is overshadowed by several serious accidents. When the dust lies, the World Cup leader is again in front-at the last second.
Oscar Piatri has secured the pole position at the Grand Prix of the Emilia-Romagna. The McLaren pilot prevailed in a gripping qualifying on Saturday with a wafer-thin lead over world champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull), George Russell (Mercedes) drove in third place.
For Piatri it is the third pole position – he all drove in this year. His teammate Lando Norris (England) was only fourth. “It was hard work, I thought I had lost it in the last curve, luckily it was enough,” Piatri sparked in the box.
The qualification was overshadowed by several serious accidents, but all drivers survived the crashes unharmed.
The Ferrari pilots Charles Leclerc (Monaco) and Lewis Hamilton (England) experienced a bitter disappointment like the Antonelli (Mercedes) born in nearby Bologna. The trio missed the third phase of qualifying. Leclerc became eleventh, behind it started Hamilton and Antonelli. Nico Hülkenberg (Emmerich/Sauber) had to be satisfied with the 17th place, for the Germans it will be difficult to go to the points.
Yuki Tsunoda particularly caused a moment of terror: After a driving error, the Japanese teammate from Verstappen turned away in the first part of the qualifying, his Red Bull crashed into the gang and overturned. Tsunoda survived the accident without injuries, because of the clean -up work there was a major delay. Later, alpine pilot Franco Colapinto also crashed, and the Argentinian also arose unharmed to his racing car.
