A burning piano on the Vaartweg in Smilde caused surprised looks and a report to the fire brigade on Sunday evening. How the instrument ended up there, and how it could catch fire, remains a mystery for the time being.

The report came shortly after an earlier call in Norg, where a tree lay on the road. While the fire brigade drove towards Smilde, the situation there turned out to be remarkable: on the side of the Vaart, the remains of what was once a piano.

Who has put the piano along the canal and why is unclear. Bystanders suspect that the instrument was intended to invite musical passers -by to a summer tune. But it didn’t come that far: before a test was hit, the flames already hit the woodwork.

The remains of the piano were scattered in black spread in the roadside. According to the fire brigade, arson is not excluded.
