The PI Vught plans to press charges after three employees were taken hostage by a detainee in a department of the Penitentiary Psychiatric Center (PPC) on Friday. The Judicial Institutions Service (DJI) Saturday.

On Friday evening, DJI reported that two employees were being held hostage. Now the organization reports that it involved three employees who were “held hostage in a locked room”. One of the three was able to be brought to safety in the meantime. The other two were then delivered later in the evening as well. “Considering the circumstances,” they are doing well, the DJI reports.

The detainee was arrested on Friday. On Friday evening, it was already circulating in various media that it was Corne H., who became national news by taking four young bar employees hostage in a café in Ede for hours in March 2024. On Saturday, his lawyer confirmed against it NRC that H. is indeed the hostage taker from Friday evening.

Hostage situation in Ede

The hostage situation in Ede lasted more than seven hours and led to great panic. Police cordoned off the entire center, residents of 150 surrounding homes had to leave their homes, train traffic was stopped, shops had to close. The mobile unit and the Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were ready, as was a specially trained negotiator.

H. was sentenced a year ago to nine months in prison and TBS for the hostage situation. The sentence was lower than the requirement, because the judges wanted H. to be able to start his TBS treatment as soon as possible. Discussions with a psychologist and psychiatrist showed that his action was a cry for help. The hostage situation was preceded by years of psychological problems, which the authorities were unable to solve time and time again.

‘Awaiting a place in a TBS clinic’

Apparently there was no place available for H. in the TBS clinic until now. Sometimes it takes longer than two years before a convict can start his TBS treatment due to long waiting lists, reports the NOS Saturday. According to sources from RTL News H. was indeed awaiting a place in a TBS clinic.

The DJI did not report on Saturday how exactly the hostage situation in Vught could take place. It is also not known whether H. surrendered himself and where he is now. The police are investigating the incident.
